Skill: Visualizing

Grade Level: 5th-9th

Analogy: A picture paints a thousand words

Conversation: Have you ever listened to someone read you a story? Not just anyone, but someone who really reads well. They really jump into character and use just the right kind of expression to make the story really interesting! Their ability to read so well helps you to make images in your head! It’s like a motion picture is playing inside your mind capturing all of the words that you are hearing being read to you! If this has ever happened to you that means you are a good listener but an even better reader!

Example: Have you ever heard the expression “A picture paints a thousand words?”

Essential Question: Why is it so important to visualize as you read?

Share: Allow students to share their thinking with the closest friend, and report out whole group upon your discretion. Post sticky notes on the large sheet of white paper and post it on the classroom wall as an artifact for future use.

Model: Read aloud a high-interest picture book. Allow students to sketch out images that they were able to visualize during the reading. Compare student images to the illustrator’s images and discuss the similarities and differences.

Independent Reflection: Have students reflect on the use of the skill alone. Students can write a short paragraph that elaborates on the essential question. Responses should include how this skill is beneficial while reading and in life. Responses should be used as an informal assessment, a teacher may choose to revisit and re-teach parts of the lesson based on their findings.
